North Korea, Iran: "The Same Promises, the Same Assurances"

Press Release

Date: Jan. 6, 2016
Location: Washington, D.C.

Congressman Patrick Meehan (PA-07) today issued the following statement after the North Korean regime conducted a nuclear test last night:

"This test is just the latest sign that North Korea is a regime hell-bent on building and developing a sophisticated nuclear program," said Congressman Meehan. "The passage of the 1995 nuclear deal with Iran came with it promises from the Clinton Administration of accountability and transparency for Kim's regime. Those promises went un-kept and the North's nuclear program moved forward despite repeated assurances from Washington that all was well."

"Those same sort of assurances are echoed today by the Obama White House as it seeks to assure us that its own deal with Iran will be more successful," Meehan continued. "The Iran deal and the North Korean deal were sold with the same promises, the same assurances, to the American people, sometimes even word-for-word. When you put the rhetoric of the 90's and the North next to the rhetoric of today and Iran, it's hard to tell the difference."

"Last night's test was a terrible demonstration of the consequences of putting our trust in dictators and terrorists. And it should be a warning to the Obama Administration to avoid repeating the mistakes of the past."
